Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order

Release Date: June 19, 2019

In what will surely make many of us feel terribly old, it’s been a decade since Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 gave us co-op arcade-style brawling as our favorite Marvel superheroes. And out of nowhere, Nintendo has secured Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 as a Switch exclusive – the perfect fit when you consider the relative ease of getting four Joy-Con controllers for maximum multiplayer fun. Your team of heroes is going up against Thanos and his minions in The Black Order – who you last saw in Avengers: Infinity War – and you’ll have to punch, claw, and smash your way through legions of goons to reach them. With vibrant visuals, a host of new heroes (and a few villains?) joining the roster, and the option for local or online co-op, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is looking like the perfect opportunity to team up with pals.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Release Date: June 26, 2019

Isn’t it about time that the Fire Emblem series mixed its turn-based tactics with a JRPG take on Harry Potter’s Hogwarts? Your male or female protagonist is recruited to be a teacher at the prestigious Officer’s Academy, and which of the school’s three houses you choose to take under your wing will have huge implications for the story and battles alike. Once you’ve signed up to be a professor with the Black Eagles, Blue Lions, or Golden Deer, you’ll foster your students’ academic and combat abilities, eventually becoming a mentor to a would-be ruler. When you’re not in class or on the battlefield, you can free-roam the giant Garreg Mach Monstastrey housing the Officer’s Academy or chat with a mysterious girl named Sothis who only you can see.

Wolfenstein: Youngblood

Release Date: June 26, 2019

Like father, like daughters – especially when it comes to killing Nazis by the hundreds. The newest game in Bethesda’s rebooted Wolfenstein series follows Jess and Soph Blazkowicz, the twin daughters of series hero B.J. who go looking for their dad after he goes missing. There’s been a time skip since the events of  Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus , as the Nazi-slaying action takes place in Paris circa 1980 of this technologically advanced alternate timeline. Given that Wolfenstein: Youngblood follows the inseparable Terror Twins (as fearful Nazis have come to nickname them), this will be the first game in the FPS series built around co-op, with support for two players embodying the Blazkowicz girls in their cybernetic Power Suits. But if you opt to play solo, you’ll still get an AI partner so you don’t have to go it alone as you rampage through the Nazi forces shooting everything that moves.

Control

Release Date: August 27, 2019

The next game from Remedy Entertainment is a weird one, and we mean that in the best way possible. Control fuses elements of Max Payne’s gunplay with Alan Wake’s surreal, thoroughly creepy atmosphere. You play as Jesse Faden, a woman lured into an underground facility called  The Oldest House, where the Federal Bureau of Control offices have been taken over by otherworldly forces. You’ll have to fight off mind-controlled soldiers and trans-dimensional entities using a morphing pistol known as the Service Weapon and some supernatural abilities you’ll gain over time, Metroidvania-style. With its ethereal visual effects and unsettling vibe (inspired in part by SCP Foundation fiction), Control is a headtrip perfect for anyone who wants to shoot at Lovecraftian horrors which humanity can’t even begin to understand.

Astral Chain

Release date: August 30, 2019

Bayonetta 3 isn’t the only Switch exclusive that PlatinumGames has in the pipeline. Astral Chain is another rip-roaring, third-person brawler being directed by the lead designer of the phenomenal Nier: Automata, so you know to expect some top-notch, combo-heavy action. As a member of the high-tech Neuron police force protecting a cyberpunk city, you’ll need to fight back invading creatures from another dimension with the help of Legion, your partner/weapon. Battles will be decided by how you utilize the dual nature of combat, as you and Legion choose to fight together or apart depending on the opposition.

Gears 5

Release Date: September 10, 2019

If you thought Gears of War 4 played it a little too safe with its Stars Wars: The Force Awakens-style torch-passing story, Gears 5 wants to remind you that the series is never one to adhere to expectations. The Coalition’s new protagonist is no longer walking dude-bro JD Phoenix, but former sidekick Kait, who decides to abandon her post as a Gear and discover her identity, now that we know she’s related to the Locust Queen Myrrah in some form or another. Everything we’ve seen so far looks unexpectedly brilliant, but here’s hoping Gears 5 has a few more surprises up its armoured sleeve than 2016’s so-so reboot.

Borderlands 3

Release Date: September 13, 2019

It’s been a long time coming, but Gearbox is finally giving us more of what we so desperately wanted with Borderlands 3, the next chapter in this beloved co-op loot shooter series. The cel-shaded, post-apocalyptic wastes are being lorded over by the big bad Calypso Twins, and a new foursome of Vault Hunters is out to stop them (fighting alongside plenty of familiar faces like Brick, Mordecai, Lilith, Tiny Tina, and many more). You’ll take on the role of Moze the Gunner, Amara the Siren, FL4K the Beastmaster, or Zane the Operative as you mow down countless bandits, mutants, and critters in the pursuit of new guns, with over a billion variations for how these randomized firearms can blast your enemies to bits. I’m already itching to get my hands on a rifle that sprouts little legs and starts sprinting towards its target.

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening

Release Date: September 20, 2019

It’s been over 25 years since The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening first graced the Game Boy, capturing the rich gameplay and captivating world of A Link to the Past and morphing it into a seaside adventure perfectly suited for Nintendo’s handheld. Now, the classic island adventure is being lavishly remade for the Nintendo Switch, coating the tropical action in a coat of lovely HD paint while replicating its iconic level designs. The adorable new art style is subtly distinct from the likes of A Link Between Worlds, with Link and co. resembling cute minifigures – but the gameplay looks just as timeless as the original.

Phoenix Point

Release Date: September 2019

Whether you played the original X-COM back in the day or love the modern reboots from 2K, there’s just something satisfying about defending the planet from hostile aliens via tactical, turn-based battles full of sudden surprises and miraculous saves. If you’re waiting impatiently for XCOM 3, you’ll be happy to know that Phoenix Point – headed up by Julian Gollop, creator of the original X-COM – will scratch that same sci-fi strategy itch. In the desolate post-apocalypse of Phoenix Point, humanity has split into factions following a viral outbreak, and horrific aliens are terrorizing the wastes. As one of the factions fighting to protect Earth, you’ll need to ally (or war) with other factions to bolster your forces, then take the fight to hordes of hideous, crab-human-hybrid mutants to ensure our species’ survival.

The Outer Worlds

Release Date: October 25, 2019

If you’re one of the many folks who was disappointed by the largely lifeless wasteland of Fallout 76, and you’ve still got a hankering for a truly great first-person RPG, The Outer Worlds could very well be the cure for what ails ya. This sci-fi adventure comes to us courtesy of Obsidian Entertainment, the studio behind Fallout: New Vegas, and it’s packed with space-age personality. You’ll meet chatty NPCs and shoot up all kinds of bandits and rogue robots during your travels, exploring an alien frontier that blends the Wild West with the Silver Age of space heroics. If you have a soft spot for Fallout, Borderlands, Rage, or any combination of the three, The Outer Worlds is definitely one to keep an eye on.

Death Stranding

Release Date: November 8, 2019 (PS4) / TBC (PC)

Death Stranding is Hideo Kojima’s first game after the Metal Gear franchise, and it’s exclusive to PS4. Naturally, it features weird old babies and stars Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Lea Seydoux, and other familiar faces from Hollywood. Each trailer has generated even more questions while giving few answers, but everything we’ve seen has been breahtaking, with main character Sam (Reedus) narrowly avoiding all kinds of nightmarish creatures as he delivers parcels around the world. Here’s the best breakdown you’ll read, but if you want the TLDR version: it’s Kojima doing another high-quality action adventure with a ridiculously big budget, so get excited.

Pokemon Sword and Shield

Release Date: November 15, 2019

Game Freak’s best-known series officially enters Generation 8 now we know Pokemon Switch is called Pokemon Sword and Shield, the second set of mainline games on the Nintendo Switch after Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee and Pikachu. The catch-’em-all, Gym-battling adventure takes place in the region of Galar this time around, which resembles modern-day England with its sprawling, picturesque countryside, contemporary city, and snowy villages. We’re already having the most difficult time choosing between the three Pokemon Gen 8 starters, but social media seems to be quite taken with Sobble, the timid Water Lizard type.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

Release Date: November 15, 2019

Respawn Entertainment’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order had quite the showing at Star Wars Celebration 2019, and it looks like the Star Wars game we’ve been waiting for. This single-player, third-person adventure follows Cal Kestis, an incognito Jedi who avoids detection by following three cardinal rules: “Don’t stand out. Accept the past. Trust no one.” But when he uses the Force in desperation, he finds himself on the run from an Imperial Inquisitor known as the Second Sister, who will stop at nothing to wipe this Jedi out like all the rest. Fallen Order takes place between Episodes 3 and 4 (hello there, Star Wars: Rogue One), when Order 66 is in full effect, so we can’t wait to see how Cal fights for his survival using his lightsaber, Force powers, and wits.

Shenmue 3

Release Date: November 19, 2019

The Shenmue series was never a huge commercial success, but thanks in part to Kickstarter and thousands of fans’ hard-earned dollars (plus some generous funding from Sony), the project is fully underway. In Shenmue 3, you’ll take the role of a martial artist named Ryo Hazuki as he attempts to uncover who is responsible for his father’s murder. It promises to have gameplay reminiscent of the previous titles, enabling players to take on enemies in hand-to-hand combat, upgrade combat abilities, and explore a living world full of villages, shops, and an active populous.

Doom Eternal

Release Date: November 22, 2019

Of course a sequel to 2016’s Doom reboot is happening. Not only was it a magical comeback for FPS veteran developer id Software, but the game’s flippant approach to contemporary game design and indulgent storytelling was a breath of fresh air in a claustrophobic corridor of play-it-safe products. Doom Eternal will bring the horrors of Hell to the Terra Firma itself, and Doomguy is not happy about it. Ready your trigger fingers for another epic battle with the underworld’s pantheon of demonic fiends and nasties.

GTFO

Release Date: TBC 2019

If you often reminisce about the horrific hordes and harrowing escapes of the Left 4 Dead series, GTFO looks to be your next fix of four-player, co-op FPS. There’s a heavy emphasis on suspense, as you and your squad of operatives (in employ of the mysterious Warden) explore mutant-filled catacombs. An AI director ensures that your party gets to enjoy the chills of creepy exploration and the thrills of staving off swarms of attackers in equal measure. And unlike the standard zombies of L4D, these ghoulish creatures can terrorize you from a distance with their grotesque extending necks.

Granblue Fantasy: Versus

Release Date: TBC 2019

Between Dragon Ball FighterZ and Guilty Gear Xrd, Arc System Works has perfected the art of making 2.5D fighting games that look all but indistinguishable from hand-drawn anime. Now the studio is striking out into new territory with Granblue Fantasy: Versus, a one-on-one fighter based on Cygames’ megahit mobile game. The pace of Granblue Fantasy: Versus is decidedly slower than Arc System’s recent games, making the combat’s mix of swords, fireballs, and all kinds of medieval weaponry feel much more approachable. Impressions from the closed beta test have been quite positive, so with any luck this anime fighter will turn out to be a breakout hit on consoles for Cygames.

Spelunky 2

Release Date: TBC 2019

The sequel to the greatest modern roguelike has been a long time coming, and we’ll finally get to explore its treacherous caves in 2019. Spelunky 2 follows the adage “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” retaining the same extremely addictive gameplay featuring 2D platforming and procedurally generated levels full of inventive enemies and deadly traps. If you need a break from exploring the dangerous depths on your lonesome, you can band together with friends in local co-op or the newly added online play. The new biomes look fantastic, as does the cast of fresh characters – including Roffy D. Sloth, an arboreal mammal with a greaser haircut. You best believe I’ll be picking him at the earliest possible opportunity.

Indivisible

Release Date: TBC 2019

Back in 2015, over $2 million in crowdfunding was raised for Indivisible, and it’s easy to see why: this RPG/Metroidvania hybrid has gorgeously drawn, beautifully animated visuals and inventive combat mechanics to match the captivating presentation. Made by Lab Zero Games, the studio behind the equally stylish fighter Skullgirls, Indivisible follows the intrepid Ajna as she encounters environments and monsters inspired by Southeast Asian mythology. As you explore 2.5D forests, temples, and tombs using your host of acrobatic abilities, you’ll recruit party members called Incarnations (which boast some delightfully unconventional character designs). The Indivisible Prototype Beta is still available on PSN if you want to check it out, and the game’s come a long way since that already-impressive showing.

Code Vein

Release Date: TBC 2019

You’d be hard-pressed to find a game that blends anime vampires, gothic horror, and grim depictions of a metropolitan apocalypse than Code Vein, an intriguing new action RPG from Bandai Namco. You and your AI-controlled partner will roam the thorny, defiled wastes, slaying monsters and sucking up blood wherever you can as you slice up enemies in familiar ‘dodge, attack, disengage, repeat’ fashion. The enemy designs are Anime Bloodborne to a tee, with slime waifus and knights clad in impossibly bulky armor, and it looks like there will be plenty of cutscenes to help establish a sweeping story amidst all the action.

Psychonauts 2

Release Date: TBC 2020

The original Psychonauts is the kind of cult classic that’s beloved by all who play it, and it set the tone for all of Double Fine’s following games: fun, quirky, imaginative, and relentlessly clever. Now, after over a decade since the debut of their first adventure at Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp, Raz, Lili, and elite members of the Psychonauts are back for another mind-delving, 3D platforming adventure. Picking up where the PSVR-exclusive Rhombus of Ruin left off, Psychonauts 2 promises more whimsical, vibrant mental mindscapes to explore as Raz runs and jumps around the inner thoughts of idiosyncratic, often hilarious characters.

Biomutant

Release Date: TBC 2019

Biomutant is the kind of bizarre new title that’s most exciting for how refreshingly different it looks, even with its hybridization of familiar structures. You play as a fully customizable furball (of an ambiguous, squirrel-esque species) in a lush post-apocalypse, where pollution is taking hold and six animal tribes vie for control of the withering Tree of Life. This third-person, open-world, action RPG has a little bit of everything: combat that blends martial arts combos and heavy artillery that would make Rocket Raccoon drool, character customization via weapon crafting and specialized mutations, and a morality system where you decide which tribes to fight with or against. Biomutant is the first game from studio Experiment 101, which was formed by veteran developers from the Just Cause series – so you already know they’ve got a handle on crafting vibrant environments ripe for open-world chaos.

Ooblets

Release Date: TBC 2019

Nothing can prepare you for the unbridled cuteness of Ooblets. It’s got a little bit of everything from your favorite adorable game obsessions: the cuddly creatures and turn-based battles of Pokemon, the rich farming simulation of Stardew Valley, and the interior decorations and vibrant color scheme of Animal Crossing. Developed by a core team of just two people, Ooblets looks to be the kind of relaxing, endlessly charming town sim that makes hours feel like minutes as you maintain your farm, raise and train a herd of the titular ooblets, or meticulously perfect the feng shui of your virtual bedroom. You just know it’s going to take over some players’ lives in the best way possible.

Cyberpunk 2077

Release Date: April 16, 2020

CD Projekt Red has given us some absolutely ravishing teases of Cyberpunk 2077 and its futuristic Night City, and until we get to play it for ourselves, we’ll be poring over every trailer and screenshot in search of new details. As a customizable protagonist, you’ll explore a dense metropolis from the first-person perspective – a departure for the studio that initially sent some Witcher fans in a tizzy. They’ll get over it when they dive into Cyberpunk 2077’s grungy world of high-tech weaponry and digital espionage.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
